A Masked Ball

Set in the SADACCA in the heart of The Wicker, Pearson’s staging of Verdi’s celebrated epic tale of politics, intrigue, corruption, betrayal and love, A Masked Ball – was Opera on Location’s most incredible production to date.

At a local annual street festival, popular and beloved politician Riccardo campaigns for his upcoming election. Little does he know, a plot to disgrace him is afoot. However, it isn’t the plot, but his misplaced love for his close friend’s wife, Amelia, that ultimately spells his downfall.

A dramatic scrutiny on the intersection of private and public life, the brand new English version of Verdi’s sweeping tragedy was brought to life in this immersive production.

With an orchestra of 18 instrumentalists and featuring a community chorus, this was a production like no other.

The production included a pre-show carnival — the Masked Ball street fair! Guests gorged on delicious street food from local eateries whilst enjoying incredible up close stunts from some amazing circus acts.

★★★★ The staging is excellent, with two trucks supporting an 18-piece orchestra, the acting area a narrow strip across the whole width of the building and a substantial tongue cutting the audience in two in the middle, with crowds swelling and oozing round minimal unimaginative furniture
